St Mary's has gained the Activemark, a badge awarded by the Government to schools whose pupils and staff are committed to an active lifestyle and prove it by their participation in sports and games - in lessons, after school, at lunchtime and by joining local sports clubs. Each year our pupils' participation rate is measured by hours of PE, club membership, numbers of tournaments entered, etc. Participation and enthusiasm at St Mary's are on the increase, and the new award proves it!
Even in the depths of winter, on the shortest day of the year, St Mary's kids are game for a game. Here they are at Sportszone for the Christmas holiday, run by RAW Skills Coaching. Wrapped up in scarves and armed with hockey sticks, they were keeping warm and learning skills at the same time.
On Thursday 22nd November, St Mary's played football for the Watkinson Cup. Teams from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 played against other local schools. Russell Watkinson reports: "I'm so proud of the kids. What they are achieving is really special. Out of 16 games we won 11, drew 4 and only lost 1, gaining 42 points out of a possible 48. Hooha St Mary's!" Congratulations to Russell and all the players from this week and last, for real strength in depth.

Alex (Y6) reports: On Friday 16th November 2007, St Mary's B Team in the Juniors went to Castle Hill Primary School (Moor Lane) and played football against B teams from Castle Hill, Lovelace and Ellingham. The first match was against Ellingham Primary School. Within the first two minutes Alex scored and we were winning 1-0. Five minutes later, Paul scored and we were winning 2-0. Then Ellingham scored and it was 2-1. As the game was about to end, Vinnie scored the third goal, giving us victory by 3-1. The next match was against Castle Hill. It was a very good game and both sides were equal until the last minute when the goal keeper for Moor Lane booted it out. Rickie controlled the ball and booted it back over the keeper. The last match was against Lovelace. This game was also highly equal until about two minutes before the end. Alex got the ball and smacked it in the bottom corner. But there was a hole in the net so for a moment they thought it didn't count, but the goal keeper admitted in went in, so St Mary's won every single game they played. YYYEEEAAAHHH!!!
Over October half-term, RAW Skills Coaching ran a two-day Sportszone course at St Mary's, which combined good practice with good fun.
On 19th October 2007, St Mary's took part in a football tournament with Castle Hill, Lovelace and Ellingham Primary Schools. Our team tried hard, but didn't win. But wait till next time!

On Sports Day 2007 we managed to dodge the showers, and a great time was had by everyone, including large crowds of parent supporters. Here are a few shots of the action:
Thanks to Danny Lowry for the Junior photos
Adam (Y6) reports: "On Saturday 30th June, we had a rugby tournament at The Stoop, Twickenham, the home of Harlequins Rugby League Club. St Mary's was representing Kingston against other London Boroughs. We took eleven players, girls and boys. It was exciting playing for the Borough on the main pitch. We played four games. In the afternoon, we watched Harlequins play Hull KR, and Harlequins won 32-18. It was a good match."

Scott (Y6) reports: "On 28th June 2007, Joe, Eloise and I went to Crystal Palace Sports Centre and represented the Royal Borough of Kingston at athletics. We did outdoor events (running races and field events) and also indoor events. I took part in indoor javelin, relay and an over-and-under race. I won the javelin with a throw of 21m." Well done Scott!
On 22nd June 2007, two football teams travelled down the road to Moor Lane. Year 4 drew 2-2, and Year 5 narrowly lost 1-2. The Year 4 goals were scored by Jack and Jamie, and for Year 5 Alex scored in his debut match.
On 11th June 2007, Russell Watkinson led another of his popular Family Fitness sessions. This time, parents and children joined together in a lively game of diamond cricket, which proved fun for all, and quite tiring on a hot day.
People of all ages (3 years to a bit older!) enjoyed Family Cricket
On 24th May 2007, Years 4- 6 played in the Cluster tag rugby tournament, organised by Harlequins RFC. They won the shield, and the older players have been invited to represent the Borough at The Stoop in Twickenham in June.
On 23rd April, the netball club fielded a team to play Lovelace. They put in lots of effort, but on this occasion Lovelace won.
On 2nd April 2007, a Year 3-4 football team played against St Paul's Primary School at home, on Churchfields. St Mary's won convincingly 7-1.
Congratulations to the Year 5 basketball team and the Year 4 hockey team who both won tournaments against the other schools in the Chessington Cluster in February and March 2007. Then at the beginning of April, the Year 6 netball team won their end-of-unit tournament. (Year 5's team came second, but included player of the tournament Archie Wilson).
Tuesday 13th February was the date of the presentation ceremony for the Kingston School Sports Partnership Awards for 2006. There were three winners from St Mary's: Eloise Robini (Sporting Champion for Year 6); Jack Binstead (Sporting Champion for Year 5 and winner of the Neil Mears Award for disabled sport); Russell Watkinson (Primary Physical Educationalist). They are pictured with Paralympian wheelchair athlete Clare Strange, who presented the awards.
Here are extracts from their nominations:
Eloise is a great example of a pupil who who makes and sustains effort in all areas of her life, both those where she is talented and those where she faces a real challenge. She has shown immense improvement with all areas of sport, but within the last year has excelled in athletics. The friendship and courtesy she shows to younger and older people in school is translated into encouragement and sportsmanship in competition. (Please scroll down the page for photos of Eloise representing the school in netball and athletics.)
Jack has a passion for sport that is unrivalled. He will always find a solution to a problem. In the last two years Jack has decided to be as good as he possibly can in a sport where he competes entirely equally - wheelchair athletics. He was the youngest competitor in the London Mini-Marathon. Jack has undergone frequent operations and his courage has been remarkable. He is a shining example to us all that nothing should stand in the way of your dreams. (Please scroll down for more about Jack's mini-marathon.)
Russell: From his original role as a KS2 sports coach, Russell has embraced the whole PE curriculum and the Primary age-range, engaging in professional training, and enthusing pupils with the full range of PE skills. Russell's particular passion and skill is to make PE accessible and desirable to all pupils. He sets high standards and brings them within the reach of each child through an unusual combination of lively fun and focused challenge.
On Monday 12th February 2007, St Mary's played Lovelace at netball.
On Tuesday 6th February a team from Years 4, 5 and 6 went and played football at Hook football ground against St Paul's Primary School. At first Joe crossed the ball to Jack and he did an amazing lob over the keeper. After that Scott shot and it went to the right of the keeper! After that Joe had a shot and it flew by the keeper, and then Joe took on everyone and put the ball in the right hand corner. The final score was 4-0 and there was one injury with Alex. Russell was very pleased with our school, and he thinks if we can beat St Paul's we might be the most successful team in the Borough! (Report by Luke M-T and Scott, Y6)
During the second half of the Autumn Term 2006, Key Stage 2 P.E. lessons have included a focus on athletic events. To round off this unit of work, the Cluster Sports Partnership organised a local festival in which 35 St Mary's pupils took part. Well done to them all, and special congratulations to Scott, Eloise , Ellie-Mai and Joe, who were invited to go on to represent the Borough. They took part in a London-wide tournament at Crystal Palace Sports Centre in January, and were praised for their good performances and their sportsmanship. Here they are at Crystal Palace:

On 17th October 2006, teams from all the Key stage 2 year-groups played in a 'mini-soccer' tournament with the other local schools. They were playing for the Watkinson Cup, named after Russell their coach. They didn't win it, but they had a very good try, coming second overall out of five schools.

On 9th July 2006, a St Mary's 7-a-side football team played Gorringe Primary School, Merton, where Russell Watkinson also teaches sport. Two matches were played, with slightly different teams, and St Mary's won both of them.

On 28th June 2006, there was a netball tournament. Lovelace, Ellingham and St Paul's and also our school were there. We left school at 3.15 p.m. In one match Ruby nearly scored but the ball hit the edge. In another match between St Paul's and our B team, Ellie-Mai scored. We were all very happy at the end of that match because of Ellie. The score was 1-1. We drew three of our matches and lost one. (Report by Ellie, Emma and Ruby)
St Mary's High Five netball teams, June 2006
On Thursday 22nd June 2006, 13 members of Years 5 and 6 went to New Malden for a swimming gala. There were 17 other schools there. In the girls' relay we came 3rd, and in the boys' relay they came 5th. Gemma came 3rd in the freestyle race, which was very good. We all tried really hard. We would like to thank Russell for cheering us along and encouraging us to do all the races. It doesn't matter about winning, it's about taking part that counts!! (Report by Olivia and Ruby, Y5)
For the second time this year, St Mary's opened its facilities during a half-term holiday to members of the school and the wider community. Sportszone is organised by Raw Skills Coaching as a multi-sport activity week for Primary aged children. The children said: You can do all sorts of sports, like cricket, football, softball and dodge-ball. You can have a chat if you want some time out, or choose another game. It's good because you get to see your friends in the holiday, the staff are very friendly, and there's a big game of football at the end of the day."

On Monday 22nd May 2006, Russell Watkinson and members of Year 6 organised a family fitness session after school. It was enjoyed by grown ups and children of all ages, who were put through their paces by Russ and his apprentice coaches.

On Tuesday 16th May 2006, six St Mary's players entered a Year 5 football tournament at the Goals Centre in New Malden. Their best result of the afternoon was beating Chessington rivals Moor Lane!

On Monday 8th May 2006, the netball team played against St Paul's Primary School. The first game was 2-1 to us. The second game we lost 0-1 to St Paul's. The third game we won 2-1. The fourth game we drew 1-1. Which means overall WE WON!!! (Report by Eloise R and Charlotte, Y5)

During the Spring Term 2006, all the Junior classes had expert sports coaching in either rugby or cricket, in partnership with Harlequins Rugby Club and Surrey Cricket Club. On Tuesday 28th March, Harlequins organised an inter-school tournament in tag rugby for Year 4 players. Our team played well, winning one match and losing another. Unfortunately, they didn't have a third match as another school's team had dropped out. Here are some of the players with the medals they gained:

On Tuesday 28th February 2006, ten people from Year 3 and ten from Year 4 went to Chessington Community College to do indoor athletics with children from other schools. We enjoyed long jump, balancing, hurdles and best of all the obstacle race at the end. We are looking forward to receiving our decathlon certificates. (Report by Paige and Joe, Y4)

During the Spring half-term holiday 2006, Russell Watkinson and Dan Shoubridge organised a daily programme of multi-sport activities called Sportszone. It was open to St Mary's pupils, and proved popular. To read a report about what was on offer, please click here.
On Monday 6th February 2006, there was another netball match at Lovelace. The A team scored 1 - 4 when they played Lovelace. When the B team played, they scored 2 - 9. We all played well, but found the Lovelace players were tall. Lovelace were friendly. We all shook hands after the match. (Report by Eloise, Ruby and Kimberley, Y5)

A hard-fought match which ended as a 2-2 draw
On Friday 7th October, St Mary's played Lovelace at football, and thrashed them 5 - 1! We improved with our passing and shooting. Scott scored one, Jack B scored three and Jack R scored one. We learned all our passing and shooting from our favourite sports teacher Russ. We hope to continue this successful start to the season. Three cheers for the boys! Hip, hip hooray! (Report by Scott and Alex, Year 5)
On the last afternoon of the Summer term, two Year 6 teams played football against members of Years 5 and 4. Russell arranged the match so that the 'retiring' players could wear the school's new kit before they moved on to Secondary school. As you can see from the photos, boys and girls were both playing, and the kit includes track suit tops. These weren't ideal for a hot day, but they should prove very useful in winter.

All the three learning stages in the school held sports events to which parents were invited. The Foundation Stage classes enjoyed themselves at a relaxed pace in great heat on Thursday 14th July, but the weather for the other events on Tuesday 19th July was more suitable - bright with a pleasant breeze. All were enjoyable and gave the children the chance to show off their athletic skills in ways appropriate to their ages. It was good to welcome many family members, and we were all grateful to the helpers who provided refreshing drinks. There was plenty of friendly team spirit, and the trophy was won by St Mark, the team in green. Thanks to Alex Guy for these photos of the Key Stage 2 event:

On Tuesday 12th July, seven of St Mary's football team went to 'Goals' for a Year 3-4 football festival. We played a tournament against lots of other schools. We lost our first and second games, won our third game and drew our last game. We felt great playing for the team wearing our new kit for the first time. (Report by Scott, Year 4)

Showing off the new kit at the Year 3 - 4 festival
On Thursday 9th June, four boys and four girls competed in a Borough mixed football tournament. They trained hard, played well, and came 4th. Well done.
On Tuesday 7th June, the St Mary's netball team were both keen and nervous. It had been some time since the school has played netball competitively, so the thought of a tournament was exciting. The team played enthusiastically, showing skill in defending and passing. Unfortunately, it was harder to shoot than usual, because the nets were at Secondary school height. Everyone enjoyed the matches, and were grateful to their coaches, Mrs Joslin, Mrs Matthews and Miss Rainbow.
On Sunday 29th May, several parents interested in sport at St Mary's organised a sponsored walk to raise funds for new kit and equipment for our sports teams. The cause was also supported by two local pubs, the White Hart and The Cricketers, and altogether over £800 was raised. Thank you very much to everyone involved on behalf of our sports boys and girls.
On Thursday 26th May 2005, ten Year 5 / 6 pupils travelled to New Malden to compete in a swimming gala. There were races for freestyle, breast-stroke and back-stroke and some relays. Everyone tried their best to get first place. Unfortunately, no-one grabbed first spot or won a trophy. However, it was a great experience and everyone enjoyed it. (Report by Luke and Francesca, Year 6)

On Tuesday 4th May 2005, eight players from Years 5 and 6 went to a cricket tournament at Chessington Cricket Club. Unfortunately, we lost our first game against Coombe Hill, which meant we had to win our second match to have a chance of getting through. We did win it, against Christ Church. Then we won against St Paul's Primary, which gave us a place in the semi-final. This match against St Paul's Juniors was tight all the way, but we just lost because they hit two sixes. Thanks to Russell for training us. He said we did well on two hours of training after the first session was rained off. (Report by Frank and Emily, Year 6)

On Friday 21st January 2005, two teams played football matches against Ellingham Primary School. The games were played at Chessington Cricket and Sports Club. Ellingham won both matches: 5-1 in the A match, and 4-3 in the B match. But they were hard-fought matches, and we are looking forward to a return fixture.
On Friday 19th November 2004, the school teams both played against Lovelace Primary. The A team played the A team of Lovelace and Lovelace won 4-2 .Goals were scored by Luke and Frank (Year 6). The B team lost 3-2,with goals by Louis and Jamie. The match finished at 4.45pm (Report by Frank and Ben, the captains.)
P.S. to the above report from an email received from the sports teacher at Lovelace: "I really enjoyed the game I was in charge of. Great attitude and effort from all the players."
On Friday 22nd October 2004, the school football team had its first match of the season against Fern Hill Primary School. We lost 2-1, but it was a very close match and Russell our coach wasn't upset because he said we played so well. Our youngest player Scott scored our goal. We are looking forward to our next match against Lovelace next month. (Report by Jake, Aaron and Joshua, Year 6)
On Tuesday 13th July 2004, we had Sports Day for Key Stage 1 in the morning and Key Stage 2 in the afternoon. The weather was good, and lots of parents came. At the end St Mark, the Green team, won. Here are some pictures. Thanks to Alex Guy of Southborough School for the KS2 photos.

On Tuesday 25th May, we played Kwik Cricket in the Borough Tournament. We played against other schools at Chessington Cricket Club. We lost against Moor Lane, won against Christ Church, but lost against St Paul's Juniors. We came third. We all enjoyed it. Our coach Russell thought we had done very well. Thank you to our supporters. (Report by Akash, Year 6)

On 20th May 2004, we went to New Malden Pool for the Borough Swimming Gala. The pool was 3m deep. Our team was four girls and four boys from Year 6. There were lots of schools there from around the Borough. Most of us swam in an individual race and a relay. At the end we had some free time in the pool after the presenations. We didn't win any cups, but we did our best and we enjoyed it. Thank you to Mrs Costard, Mrs Strong, Mrs Mason and Russell, our supporters. (Report by Christopher and Lauren, Year 6)
On May 12th 2004, St Mary's entered the Year 3 - 4 Football Festival at Dinton Field. The team didn't lose a match. They didn't win any either as they were all draws! Russell, their coach, was frustrated at this, but very pleased by the skilful play and team spirit shown by his youngest players. For a team photo, visit www.norbiton.com/kpssa/fest3_4.htm
In the first half of the Summer Term 2004, two return football fixtures were played against Lovelace Primary School. Both were played at home, on Churchfields, using the new portable goals. On April 27th, our A team won 4-0, and our B team drew 1-1. The second fixture was arranged by Alesha and Georgina (Year 6) who challenged Lovelace to an all-girls match on 10th May, which St Mary's won 5-1.
Congratulations to the football teams who played in the rain and mud against Devonshire Primary School on Friday 12th March 2004. The A team drew 1-1 after a last-minute equaliser in an excellent match. The B team showed their strength by winning 2-0 . Thank you to Russell for organising the match, and to the PTA for the great new goalposts.
In January 2004, there were two footballing fixtures for the school. We entered a team in the Borough five-a-side tournament, held indoors at Tolworth Recreation Centre. They played hard and well, but didn't score quickly enough to do themselves justice in the short matches. On January 27th, we played a seven-a-side match against Lovelace Primary School, outdoors. Although Lovelace is a bigger school, it was a needle match, with the ball travelling rapidly and skilfully around the pitch. Lots of shots were made and saved at both ends, but it was a St Mary's shot which passed the keeper and won the match 1-0.
These match photos were taken by Alex, of Southborough School, on his digital camera:

On Thursday 23rd October 2003, we had a friendly football match against Devonshire Primary School, Sutton. Daniel scored first for St Mary's, then Devonshire scored two goals. Luke scored the equaliser, and Michael scored to take the lead. Devonshire equalised in the last few minutes. It was a very good, equal game, and we all had good fun. Thank you to the parents who took us and to Russell for organising it. (Report by Michael and Nicky,Year 6)
On 28th March 2003, we took part in the National Skipping Challenge. Every class spent about 15 minutes skipping. Everyone had a partner, and we took it in turns to skip and to count our partner's skips. Each class added up their total, and the result for the whole school was 50583. This was added to the score from lots of other schools in Britain, making a grand total of 9 million skips! (Report by Rosie, Jazmine, Cara and Paige)
Skipping is fun and keeps you fit
